What is the fuss about Fire Fighting Foams?
Particular chemicals – called perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS – were used in firefighting foams by Australia’s Department of Defence in the 1970s and beyond. These substances are known as “persistent organic pollutants” or “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down. Studies have shown they had a strong tendency to accumulate in people’s blood and tissue and could potentially cause cancer. Unfortunately, these chemicals leaked into waterways near military bases across Australia where the firefighting foams were used during drills. Today, PFAS still contaminate some of these waterways, which are used for drinking, agriculture, swimming and other activities. Queesnland and South Australia have since banned foams containing these PFAs with other states expected to follow. We are the sole Australian distributor of the world leading environmentally responsible firefighting foams by VS Focum. On top of their excellent extinguishment properties, they contain no PFAs, are highly concentrated (easier to transport and store) and have an extended shelf life. What does Intrinsically Safe mean?
Intrinsic Safety (IS) is an approach to the design of equipment used in hazardous areas. The idea is to reduce the available energy to a level where it is too low to cause ignition. That means preventing sparks and keeping temperatures low – ie the product is not capable of igniting a flammable atmosphere under both normal and
